Computing

We understand the imperative nature of computing at Papplewick and aim to incorporate it across the school, not just in computing lessons. We have two large computing suites, one with PCs and another with Macs, as well as laptops and two sets of iPads, to equip everyone with technology as and when required.

The Year 7 and 8 pupils purchase laptops to use throughout their learning journey which means a sound understanding of the Microsoft programs is vital. As a result, we aim to ensure all boys are proficient with the software by Years 5 and 6, as well as having a thorough knowledge of the keyboard through our touch-typing program.

In an ever-growing world, the need for coding and algorithmic skills is becoming more prevalent than ever before. From Year 2, the boys will delve into a world of programming, using Bee Bots and computer software that will give them the core understanding of coding and how to resolve any issues they could face along the way. This is then developed as the boys go through the years, creating more complicated code and resolving ever trickier problems. This comes in the form of online coding programs, and more practical elements such as the use of Microbits as we value the need for the boys to see that what they type does change how things behave.

Other topics throughout include Online Safety, manipulating media, stop-motion animation, research projects, animated film creation, and coding smart cities. By the end of Year 8, the boys will have had an extensive and thorough education on key elements of computing, which will prepare them well for Year 9 and adulthood.
