TPR (Theology, Philosopy, and Religion)

TPR is taught throughout the school, with most years doing a term of Theology, a term of Philosophy and a term of Religion.

All three aspects of the subject are important. Boys are taught about Christian Theology so that they can learn and analyse one of the most influential texts in history. They study Philosophy so they can explore ‘big ideas’ about themselves, the society they live in and the world around them. They study world religions so they can expand their knowledge and understanding of the major religions, seeing both the similarities and differences in religion.

The subject is taught with three key assessment objectives, those of knowledge, understanding and evaluation. For example, when looking at a set text from the Bible, boys will need to learn the text, showing their knowledge of it. They would then need to explain aspects of the text, showing their understanding of it. They would also be asked a question with no definitive answer about an issue within the text, where they will consider more than one point of view before making a judgement, thus showing their evaluation skills.

Ultimately, the subject offers the opportunity to explore deep thoughts and ideas. Debate and discussion fill the classrooms. From looking at whether certain Old Testament stories were intended to be taken literally, to deciding what is the most important aim of punishment, to questioning whether Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is relevant in the modern world, or even arguing over what the ‘right’ option is in the trolley problem, TPR offers something for everyone. We learn to respect others' opinions, but also have a real focus on justifying our own with reason and evidence.
