Academic & Departments

Papplewick is well known for its strength on the academic front while supporting those that may require some additional help. We have dedicated Form Teachers and Specialist teachers as well as a Learning Support and EAL department.

Class sizes average 13 boys per class. There is one class in Year 2, two classes in Year 3,4, and 5, increasing to three classes in each of Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8. Boys in Year 2-4 are primarily under the care of the Form Teacher, where there is a strong emphasis on reading, writing and basic numeracy. However, the curriculum also includes Science, French, History, Geography, TRP, Drama, Music, ICT, Art, P.E and DT, which are taught by our specialists. Latin is introduced to boys in Year 5 and by the time boys reach Year 6-8 all subjects are taught by specialist teachers and a formal scholarship 'set' is created to whom Greek is also taught. Schemes of work are designed with close reference to the National Curriculum, Common Entrance and Public School scholarship syllabuses. It is very much our belief that teachers should be there to inspire the boys and not just to be 'curriculum deliverers'.
