Drama/LAMDA
The Lower School (Year 2 to 4) have weekly junior assemblies, and forms have the opportunity to present an assembly, be it a short play, poem or homily. Moreover, once a year, there is a Junior Variety concert, and each class presents a short drama skit, song, or dance.
The Middle School (Years 5 and 6) have a number of opportunities to perform on the stage. The Year 5 boys put on a Variety Evening in the Summer Term in which they are put into groups and are expected to produce and rehearse a short poem, skit, or dance routine with minimum intervention from teachers. In Year 6, all the boys get involved in a traditional stage play or musical. This play is rehearsed in the Lent term, and performed early in the Summer Term.
The Senior School (Year 7 and 8) boys put on the annual school musical in the Michaelmas Term. This is to all intents and purposes the traditional ‘school play’ with a production and budget to match.
Year 7 and Year 8 boys also perform from time to time short, scripted drama skits by the English department at Headmaster’s Assembly.
In addition to this, we also have an active LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) programme available to those boys who sign up for it. Trained LAMDA teachers from outside the school come in on Thursday afternoons to conduct these lessons and certificates are awarded after examinations at the end of the year.
