Maths

The aim is to instil confidence in mathematics in every boy, enabling him to achieve his full potential. We strongly believe in developing mathematical habits of mind, encouraging curiosity, resilience, logical thinking, and the ability to reason deeply rather than simply arrive at answers.

A secure grasp of the basics is essential for success in the subject, and particular emphasis is placed on times tables and mental arithmetic strategies in the early years. The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum alongside the ISEB Common Entrance and Scholarship syllabuses.

Boys are prepared for the Year 6 ISEB examinations, taken in November, through regular assessment in Year 5, including 11+ style tests and weekly Atom Learning sessions that closely mirror the ISEB online testing platform. We also run an Owl Challenge badge system that begins at Bronze level, where pupils complete 60 questions in 3 minutes, and progresses through increasingly demanding stages to Platinum level, where boys tackle a smaller number of significantly more challenging problems within a 5-minute time frame.

Beyond the classroom, boys are given rich opportunities to extend their mathematical thinking and enjoyment. The department runs Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses and UKMT competitions, including both individual and team events. In addition, we enter the Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Mathematical Challenges, with boys regularly achieving success in progressing to follow-on rounds, including qualification for the Cayley Mathematical Olympiad.

We also take part in UKMT team competitions, further developing collaboration and problem-solving under timed conditions. The Papplewick Maths Battle Tournament provides an exciting forum for collaborative problem-solving, competition, and mathematical debate, with the winning team progressing to the King’s College Maths Battle Tournament.

There is a strong and distinctive mathematical culture throughout the school. Pupils are not only highly skilled but also demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and deep understanding.

At Papplewick, problem-solving sits at the heart of our mathematical ethos and curriculum, reflected in our status as an N-rich Problem-Solving School. We believe that mathematical ability is not fixed and that every learner can make meaningful progress through curiosity, perseverance, and appropriately placed challenge.

Boys are encouraged to see struggle as an essential part of learning. Getting stuck, making mistakes, and trying alternative approaches are all valued as routes to deeper understanding and the development of strong mathematical connections.

Across the school, we deliberately create opportunities for boys to think independently and collaboratively, tackling non-standard problems that develop resilience, creativity, and confidence. Staff actively model positive attitudes towards problem-solving and provide structured thinking time, encouraging boys to explore multiple strategies and articulate their reasoning clearly.

This culture extends beyond the classroom through enrichment opportunities, clubs, competitions, and wider mathematical engagement, ensuring that problem-solving is not an occasional activity but a consistent and visible part of school life. In doing so, we aim to develop mathematicians who are not only technically secure but also flexible thinkers who enjoy challenge and can apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.

From Year 2 through to Year 8, boys are also set weekly mathematical problems, which they submit via the distinctive red Maths Post Box, a simple but valued tradition that encourages independent thought and sustained engagement with problem-solving.

Links with senior schools are actively being developed, with joint events and collaborative mathematical activities being organised to ensure continuity and further enrichment of the boys’ experience.

Formal preparation continues through to the end of Year 8, when boys sit their Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations. Whether preparing a scholar or supporting a pupil through additional tuition, the Maths Department at Papplewick is committed to developing confident, creative, and resilient mathematicians who are exceptionally well prepared for their senior schools and beyond.
