Papplewick has a thriving French department in which our aim is for the boys to embrace language learning from day one and to become proficient in all aspects of the subject. To achieve this, the boys begin studying French five times a week from Year 3, learning French phonics and verbs through interactive lessons and focused written work. This provides them with the solid base required in listening, speaking and writing skills to be ultimately successful in their scholarship and Common Entrance examinations. In the Middle and Upper School, each boy is given a learning programme tailored to their individual needs and ability. This ranges from the French beginner programme for boys experiencing the language for the first time, to our intense scholarship programme for boys who excel in the language and native speakers. We are fortunate in having our own designated language lab within the department.
Papplewick has developed a strong network in France through our annual French immersion trip to Burgundy for boys in Year 7, a correspondence programme with a school in Brittany, and links to a school for physically disabled children in Dakar, Senegal. This exposure to Francophone culture complements the boys' academic learning, and aims to inspire a lifelong love for the French language.
